Yoga is an ancient Indian science which focuses upon the union of mind, body and spirit.
I recommend Hatha Yoga which involves physical exercises and relaxation and is ideally suited to the principles outlined in Dr. Ali’s Lifestyle Programme.

Breathing
A key focus of yoga is the regulating of breathing. Most people do not breathe deeply and slowly enough. If you observe a sleeping person you will see that when they inhale the abdomen blows out, when they exhale the opposite happens. This is the correct mode of breathing. It is amazing how most people breathe incorrectly due to high stress levels causing hypertension or because of habit. It takes some practice to perfect the correct breathing technique.
Yogic breathing is not strenuous and is the most efficient way to absorb maximum oxygen from the air.

Yoga as part of your daily routine

Dr. Ali recommends a few simple yoga exercises to be carried out each day. They are demonstrated in the book Therapeutic Yoga and take about 15 minutes to complete. These 15 minutes will be one of the best investments you will ever make. In return you will gain better health, more energy and a fitter body.

Is Yoga expensive?

You don’t need any expensive equipment to practice yoga: just your body and a focused mind. A yoga mat is useful to protect your spine and prevent slipping but you can substitute this with a blanket or rug.

Do I have to attend a yoga class?

Yoga is one of the few exercise programmes that can be practiced anywhere. While yoga classes provide a social element and can help with motivation, you can gain just as much benefit from doing it in the privacy of your own home. Make sure you have plenty of space to work in. The room should be warm but aerated. Fresh air wakes you up and eliminates staleness.

Can anybody practice yoga?
Generally yes. Everybody, from babies to the elderly, can benefit from yoga.
However, people with the following conditions may need a yoga therapist to guide them through the exercises:

  • Pregnancy
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Chronic Heart Disease
  • Retinal Problems
  • Epilepsy
  • Joint Replacement
  • Post Major Surgery

Walking
A brisk walk in the fresh air is an invigorating way to exercise and can also help to:

  • Improve blood circulation
  • Restore joint mobility and reduce joint pain
  • Reduce stress and tension
  • Improve lung capacity and function
  • Reduce weight and blood pressure
  • Alleviate feelings of tiredness and lethargy
  • Improve skin condition

One of Dr. Ali’s regular projects is to take patients on walking trips to the Himalayas. Many have been seriously ill with ME, bereavement or stress related illnesses. The transformation during two weeks is astounding.
